What is wrong with the QuickTime route

QuickTime and the macOS screenshot toolbar both work, and for a quick clip you keep to yourself they are fine. The friction starts after you stop. You get a .mov on your desktop, often several hundred megabytes, and then you upload it to Drive, wait, fix the sharing permissions, and paste a link that opens a Drive viewer rather than a video.

There is also the audio problem. macOS will happily record your microphone, but capturing the sound coming out of the tab usually means installing an audio driver, which is more setup than most people want for a three-minute recording.

Recording inside the browser handles both. The tab's own audio is included when you choose to share that tab, the upload happens as you record, and the link is ready when you stop.

How to record a single tab

Works in Chrome, Edge and other Chromium browsers on macOS. Safari does not offer tab sharing.

    Open the recorder

    Sign in to Rekkko free and open the recording page in its own tab. Turn the microphone on if you are going to talk over it.

    Start recording, and when your browser asks what to share, pick the tab you want and confirm that its audio is included. Only that tab is captured, so your other windows and notifications stay out of the video.

Why tab recording is the cleaner choice

Nothing private leaks in

A single tab means no menu bar, no other windows, and no message previews sliding into the corner of a video you send to a client.

The tab's audio comes with it

A video playing in the tab or an alert sound is captured without installing any audio driver on your Mac.

No file management

There is no .mov on your desktop to find, upload, or delete later. The recording lives in your library and you share the link.

If you need more than one tab

When the demo moves between tabs or apps, choose the window or the whole screen instead. You lose the neat boundary of one tab, so turn on do not disturb first and close anything you would not want in the recording.

For whole-screen recordings, your microphone is captured but the sound coming from your Mac may not be. If the audio from the app matters, share the tab it lives in.

Cleaning it up

Trim the front where you were finding the right tab, and the end where you reached for the stop button. Silences and filler words come out in one click, and you can delete a sentence from the transcript to cut it out of the video.

Then paste the link. It plays in a browser on any device, including the phone the person will probably watch it on, and they do not sign into anything.

The honest limits

Better you read this here than find out halfway through a recording.

  • A single recording can be up to 2 GB. Long recordings at high resolution get there faster than you would think.
  • Recording works in desktop browsers only. Phones and tablets can watch, but not record.
  • You need a free account to record. The people you send the link to need nothing at all.

Do I need to install anything?
